William D. Carpenter was born in 1924 (Mildenhall Q3-1924 4A:1563), son of Ernest Francis and Florence Barbara CARPENTER (née LINNING), later of Bury St.Edmunds. His grandfather Isaac CARPENTER was a farmer from Wylde Street, Beck Row.

In the 1939 register, a farm worker, he was with his parents were at Wilde Street, Beck Row, father [31-1-1897] a smallholder; mother [2-10-1891] and brother Robert F [15-1-1923] assisting father and Kenneth C BYATT [8-9-1926] scholar (evacuee ?) There is one closed record.

Possibly the family used 'Donald', or Mildenhall memorial folk used 'Donald' to differentiate from William, son of William and Alice.


6th Seaforths were part of 17th Infantry Brigade, 5th Infantry Division. They had landed at Anzio. On 30th April the 2nd Northants had been overrun by a German attack on the Fortress ( a few miles north of Anzio). On the 1st May the 6th Seaforths made an unsuccessful attack on the Fortress.
